Managing the Flood

“Urban Estuary” East Brooklyn, NY

Reimagining the potential of East Brooklyn by creating a vibrant, mixed-use, mixed-income development that addresses affordable housing, local economies, recreation, and mobility. By integrating the wildlife preserve of Jamaica Bay into the development, the habitats of both people and the estuary intertwine, ensuring climate resilience for the wider community. The design strategy is centered around three key principles: transportation, water management, and housing. Water management is prioritized by opening up blocks and incorporating winding loops, allowing water to flow naturally. The concept of a “sponge city” guides the development, ensuring ecological resilience by responding to changing tides, storm surges, and rising sea levels.
